Designing for the Audience
Understanding your audience is the cornerstone of creating effective learning experiences. Starting every project with a thorough analysis enables me to tailor the content and delivery methods to meet the needs and preferences of the audience.
For this project, I determined that presenting material as an animated video combined with interactive activities in Storyline would be engaging and enjoyable for the learner.
The main character in the course is an older man with a friendly voice. He presents the information in a non-judgemental, sometimes humorous manner, much of it from the comfort of his living room. There’s a lot of sensitivity around the topic of phishing scams. Often, older adults feel shame if they do fall for the scam. I designed the character, setting and overall tone of this course to make the learner feel unguarded, like they are having a conversation with a peer.
The user-interface design is clean and straightforward so that learners can navigate the course easily, without being distracted or frustrated with what to do or where to go next.
The material is broken down into smaller chunks, which, when assembled, provide the learner with enough information to meet the goal of spotting a phishing attempt without being overly complicated or long since I wanted the course to be thorough, without requiring too much time to complete.
